Jan 22 2010, KUCHING: Old diesel buses are expected to be phased out in Kuching over a five-year period to make way for environment-friendly bus services, said State Housing and Rural Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg here on Wednesday.
Abang Johari said, since the buses were dirty and emitted unhealthy
smoke, maintaining them was not practical as passengers were not
comfortable and tended to avoid bus services.
“The condition of the buses is deplorable. Who will want to use such
services? This is why we are introducing environment-friendly buses
that use natural gas,” he said after meeting Kuching Selatan town
councillors.
He also said that a meeting would be held with public transport service
providers by end of this month to discuss ways to overcome traffic
congestion in Kuching.
Abang Johari said that Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud had
directed him to restructure the public transport system, including
water taxis in Sungai Sarawak, so as to attract more tourists to
Kuching.
