Yes we all know that styrofoam is bad for the environment. And we all know that when we throw them indiscriminately, these bad plastics would reach places we only hope to go. Apart from the eye sore, styrofoam or plastic materials end up in the ocean often consumed by sea creatures who often mistake them for food.
Yet how many of us actually make an effort to find out more about alternative products that are more eco friendly? Or actually purchase and used these eco friendly products?
Much to our surprise, we have a local company here in Malaysia that actually makes biodegradable packaging products from food containers, spoons, plates to even seeding cups for nurseries.
Ecologico Packaging Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of EcoFuture Berhad, is an environmental conservation and technology based company which optimizes oil palm biomass such as empty fruit bunches (EFB) sourced from the Group’s milling operations. The EFBs are processed and transformed in to value-added packaging products available for purchase. And how is it eco-friendly? For starters, the products are made from natural palm fiber. Secondly, their products have received various international certifications by international organizations and institutions. This launched a whole range of eco friendly packaging products called EcoPak®.
In addition all EcoPak® products are:
- Biodegradable
- Non toxic
- Disposable (don’t we Malaysians love disposable things)
- Non-wax coated
- Microwaveable
- Used to contain cold or hot food
In terms of pricing, these eco friendly items are still roughly 3 to 4 times more expensive than then conventional styrofoam. But if one takes in to consideration the reduced impact it has on the environment, it sure is worth the extra money. The tough part is convincing consumers to collectively see value in preserving the environment.
So if you run a huge catering business, or even have a huge company with canteen facilities, then perhaps, it’s worth considering the switch to eco friendly products.
