Tuesday November 24, 2009, Penang - Although the level of environmental awareness in Penang at 15% was higher than the 5% national average, the state government is not happy.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee
chairman Phee Boon Poh said although Penang had a higher percentage, he
considered it as a disappointment.
“This is because we should have achieved 95% as we are heading towards
becoming a green state and we need our people to be more aware of the
environment,” he said at the Khoo Kongsi Charity Food Fair 2009 at the
Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi on Saturday.
Also present was event organising chairman Datuk Seri Khoo Keat Siew
He said a resource centre had been set up in each of the state’s five
districts to carry out environmental awareness programmes for the
people.
“We are also working jointly with the Penang and Seberang Prai
municipal councils to carry out environmental programmes at
school-level.
“We have also invited relevant government agencies and even multi-national corporations to contribute their part,” he added - The Star Online
