Proposal Writing and Filming Tips Print E-mail
Written by Alam Maya • Wednesday, 26 March 2008

So what do we look for in writing a film proposal about climate change? Well, we managed to scout for and convinced some of EcoKnights' creative consultants and environmentalists, cracked their heads and sieved out some of the important tips to guide you through writing a great proposal.

And here are the tips:

ONE. Understanding the issue

  • Choose one issue on climate change that you would like to highlight. Then think: Is it relevant – why is this issue important and why it is something that Malaysians need to know about, acknowledge and find solutions for?

  • Is it bold – is the issue not known at all and would researching it be difficult? Are you confident enough to translate the issue accurately?

  • Does the issue fit in with the theme of “Climate Change??

To provide guidance, ECOKNIGHTS will conduct an Environment Workshop for the short-listed and final proposals. Featuring the country’s renowned environmentalists, lobbyists and policy makers, you will get a chance to get a better understanding of the issues.

TWO. Substance/content/subject matter

  • What new or different point of view do you want your viewers to understand?

  • What are the important points about the environment that this documentary will discuss?

  • Translating the points to visuals i.e. provide in depth information about who you would like to feature/interview, the scenarios of visuals in which you plan to capture these points.

  • Provide story line or outline if possible, but not necessary. (If your proposal is chosen we will help you write the script). It’s important to show that you have a clear idea of how the video will be executed and look like in the end.

  • Demonstrate that the issue chosen is well-research and well thought out.

THREE. Treatment/Cinematography

  • Describe how you intend to treat the film. You can use a variety of ways from music, editing techniques, symbolism, and storyline – any creative approach – to make your video interesting and attractive to your audiences. Heck, it could even be a music video!
  • Tricks under the sleeves

  •
    1. Researching is always important. So make sure you know and understand the topic well. Find out if there’s someone out there whom you can interview or profile.

    2. Understand your issue well before taking on the subject. You should be able to show to the audience that you actually know what you are talking about.

    3. What is your stand on the issue? Focus on making one or two points in the film. This would be the take-home message for you intended viewers.

    4. Always plan and think ahead. An idea is just an idea if you can’t translate it to something tangible for the audience. So it helps to think from A-Z when you want to make a winning film, from the content to the treatment.

    5. A film is nothing without good audio/interviews and visuals, so you always need to have in mind what audio/visuals you will need to make your point. If you are using local music sources, do get the necessary permission.

    6. Know and improve your strengths. Understand your weakness(es) and make it your strength(s). Have a team that’s well learned in areas that you think you may be lacking in. A good team is one that has the adequate skills that contributes to making the film a success.

To provide guidance, EcoKnights will conduct a Directors’ Workshop for the short-listed and final proposals. Featuring the country’s top creative directors, production team and content developers, you will get a chance to get a better understanding of the issues.

Based on this in sights from our panel of experienced experts, it shouldn’t be that tough at all to come up with a first proposal. The most important parts are controlled by you – an in-depth knowledge of the issue, and a creative mind. Good luck!
