Competition Guidelines

Thematic Focus : World’s Sustainable Development and Environment Issues
Subject (2008) : “Climate Change - A Call for Action”
Video Format : Documentary / Narration / Animation/Short Film. Length of video for documentaries, short films and narrations should not exceed 15 mins, for animations should not exceed 3 minutes.

a. First Time Film Maker

b. Been there, Done that (Existing Film Maker)

Video Language : Any widely used dialect in Malaysia but must include English/Bahasa Malaysia subtitles.

Terms of Eligibility

  1. All contestants must be Malaysian age 18 years and above.
  2. All entries are free of charge.
  3. All entries submitted must meet submission datelines.
  4. A detailed biography of the applicants must be included

What to Expect

  1. Submission of Proposal/Synopsis/Film Entries - All participants are allowed to submit as many proposals/synopsis as they like BUT all submissions, detailed biography of applicant(s) must be done online and emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . All submissions must be sent in PDF format. Refer to Proposal Guidelines for additional information on how to create a film proposal. All submissions will not be returned to the entrant. The submission dateline is July 15th 2008.

  2. Selection Process and Authorisations - Once all proposal entries have been submitted, 5 of the best proposal/synopsis/film entries will be chosen. The five finalists will be announced online (www.ecoknights.com) on August 1st 2008. Upon completion of the films, the festival has the right to use a maximum of ten minutes of the video from the documentaries/animations for broadcasting, publicity and online purposes. The festival also has the right to use the publicity material for non-circulating and educational purposes.

  3. Notify of 5 short listed candidates - These chosen candidates will then be informed of their participation in the Eco Film Festival. The 5 chosen candidates will each be given financial and technical support from EcoKnights and their partners to make their proposals into films (for nonfilm submissions).

    Film Gear will provide film/video lighting equipment for the short listed finalists of the competition.
  4. Invitation to two (2) workshops - Chosen candidates for the Eco Film Fest will be invited to two (2) workshops that will provided them with supplementary knowledge to help them get started with film making.

    • Directors Workshop- Provide tips and ways of storyboard development, producing,o directing, managing the process of film making. We will feature the country's top film makers in a workshop environment to teach the finalists the film making tips.

    • Environmental Workshop- Provides an in depth analysis of current environmental issues involved as to maintain current scope of project.

  5. Submission of Completed Video/Film - All completed films must be in DVD format. All films must be submitted to EcoKnights by the proposed date (September 20th 2008) via mail or by hand. All delivery expenses will be borne by the finalist.

  6. Public screening- All public screenings will be conducted at Kuala Lumpur MotoPark (www.motopark.com.my), ASWARA, Palate Pallete and HELP College.

  7. Announcement of ECO FILM FEST 2008 WINNER (Nov 1 and 2nd 2008)
    • Among 5 top finalists, 3 contestants will stand a chance to go home with an EcoFilmFest2008 Award Trophy + an opportunity to enroll in a complimentary film-maker’s course-of-choice organized by ASWARA + cash prizes + flight tickets to an international film festival.
    • Courses offered by ASWARA for (3) participating winners of EFF2008. Each winning contestant is to choose only ONE:
      1. Documentary Production / Penerbitan Dokumentari
      2. Film Directing / Pengarahan Filem
      3. Animation Certificate / Sijil Animasi
    • The winning films and director(s) will have have their documentary/animation submited to the International Documentary Festival Association (IDFA) based in Netherlands. The juries for the film festival are representatives from each of the festival's supporters. All decisions made by the festival management and juries are final and participation of documentaries implies unconditional acceptance of the regulations.
