UNITARians reach out to orphans for the environment Print E-mail
• Tuesday, 07 April 2009

April 4th, 2009, Petaling Jaya - Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UNITAR) students from the Environmental Management (KMB 1031) class (January intake, 2009) recently conducted an outreach programme for the orphans from the Agathians Shelter. Themed "Global Awareness Campaign", this project is part of the students' class project (and grades) for their course.

The Environmental Management course, taught by EcoKnights Founder, Yasmin Rasyid, is one of the elective courses taught at UNITAR. The course was discontinued 2 years ago due to lack of resource persons but has since been activated about a year ago.

As part of their class project, the students prepared exhibition materials, games and also screened some short films on the environment for the orphans whom were led by volunteer and caretaker, Jen Simpson. Simpson is the Director of AIESEC Australia, a non-profit and volunteer-based international platform for youth to develop their leadership skills.

Some prizes, like kinetic torchlights and food hampers were given to the orphans after the games were conducted. The orphans were then given a brief tour of the exhibition materials on display and seeing how much the children loved the materials (which were made from recycled items anyway), they were ecstatic when the students of UNITAR gave it away to them. Some of the orphans could not wait to share their "new toys" with the younger orphans back in the shelter.

The students who organised this event also donated books and clothes for the orphan and before the orphans left for home, there were plenty of packed food and full cream milk packed for the entire shelter.

Here are some pictures of UNITAR's class project on raising awareness on global warming for underprivileged children.

The students conducted an exhibition that was made entirely of recycled items like this Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) replica was made of old newspapers.
Creativity + recycled items = great trophies. Yasmin taught the students to make trophies from recycled mineral water bottles and used aluminium foil. With the magic of super strengthed glue, unwanted materials were transformed to something more "valuable"
