Have you heard? A breed of young Malaysian ecoknights are championing the race against climate change. Made up of mostly 6th formers (17 to 19 years of age) who are studying for their A Levels at Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar , they are participating in a huge global movement call "The People Speak" organised by the United Nations Foundations (under UN) to create awareness in a community, and encourage action amongst students and raise awareness on issues such as (it's the main topic this year) climate change.
The United Nations Foundation has partnered with IDEA (an international
body for regulating debate competitions around the world) to encourage
debating as well. And the best projects on this planet will be
presented at the Global Youth Leadership Summit in New York next July 2009 where
proposals and ideas will be heavily debated.
Asked about their objectives for participating, Melissa Kong (19), a
member of this GREEN team explained that she joined this movement because she
wanted to put her skills to use for a good cause.Raised in Borneo
(Sarawak), Melissa finds it disconcerting that Malaysians are not doing
enough to combat climate change at home.
" We've got people from all over Malaysia (and one Bangladeshi) in
our team, and it's good because we're all learning about our
environment and how to help it. This project is galvanizing us to
think, the way the local education system never really pushed us to," added Melissa.
And how is this brave team from Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar doing it? They have created a blog (check out their web URL - http://colourmegreen.wordpress.com )
with articles related to the topic of climate change
and to the motion. The blog also contains public service annoucements
and a section where the team debates on an action plan they came up
with to combat climate change.
The expected outcomes they are hoping for is an increased awareness on climate change amongst peers. In their blog, they have already started a discussion on their plan to significantly reduce climate change, prior to the Global Debates Competition. The goal? To “Make Clean industries as a prerequisite for rendering of Official Development Assistance (ODA).”
