Over the last 2 years, the world saw a flood of eco-celebrities from Al Gore ("The Inconvenient Truth" ), to Leonardo DiCaprio ("The 11th Hour" ) and more recently Joaquin Phoenix's appearance in "Earthlings" - a documentary about mankind's dependence on animals for pets, food, clothing, entertainment and use in experimentation.
People in the arts take inspiration from many sources, whether it’s a
tough upbringing, personal relationships or the bottom of a glass.
Since the rise of a greater ecological consciousness in the 1960s,
green issues have figured more prominently in music, movies and
literature. The latest example of the environment spurring the
entertainment world to action is the Live Earth concert (termed “the
concerts for a climate in crisis”). In the local scene, there was the
Eco Film Fest 2008, November 1st and 2nd 2008, held at the National
Arts and Culture Academy.
In Malaysia, a flood of new local celebrities and performers are turning green in their own little ways. Some write beautiful environmental songs (Azmyl Yunor, Mia Palencia to name a few) and some practice it (Maya Karin 's green wedding). And there are those like TV host Rina Omar who is very vocal about wildlife protection and the need to curb illegal trade of animal parts. At the recent Eco Film Fest, the green performers shocked most of the general public with their beautiful environment-related songs and truly, there are many out there who are literally singing about the environment.
