EcoKnights is proud to have Gerai OA as a participant in the Eco Film Fest. Thanks to Reita Rahim's time and efforts, EcoKnights welcomes Gerai OA and hopes to further promote their products through this website. To find out more about them, read on here.

What is Gerai OA?

They are a nomadic, volunteer-run stall which sells handicrafts made by the Orang Asal (OA), the indigenous
minorities of Malaysia. 100% of the sales monies is returned to the indigenous craftspeople. Gerai OA also sells various books, VCDs and CDs on subjects related to indigenous peoples.

Where is their shop?

They have none, as they are neither a business nor a non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). They have no permanent premise, receive no funding and do not even own a bank account.

Are they a middleman?

No, they only facilitate sales of OA items; they earn no commissions. As Gerai OA only opens when offered rentfree sites and because non-OA volunteers aren’t paid, they can return 100% of the stated price to the craftsperson named on the brown tag.

So what are they?

Gerai OA is an ever-changing bunch of volunteers who have been at it since October 2004. Varied ages, ethnic
groups, nationalities. But they all believe in helping indigenous communities to help themselves.

Who makes the crafts?

Most of our craftspeople are women and elders from various ethnic minorities including the Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia (Mah Meri, Semai, Semelai, Jakun, Temiar & Temuan), the Orang Ulu of Sarawak (Bidayuh, Eastern Penan, Kenyah & Lun Bawang), and the Anak Negeri of Sabah (Rungus, Bajau & Dusun).

Can we buy directly from the OA?

Yes, Gerai OA greatly encourages direct trade. Ask us for the relevant business card(s).

Why can’t we buy in bulk?

Gerai OA emphasizes product functionality & resource sustainability; the items we help to sell are not massproduced. Also, many OA now live in degraded or logged-over areas, or nearby plantations; they have limited natural resources. So while our craftspeople are proud that their products are in great demand, it is just not physically possible
to produce more!

Does Gerai OA do anything else?

Gerai OA actively documents, revives & revitalises the indigenous craft heritage of Malaysia. They conduct
research, lectures, craft workshops and training sessions throughout Malaysia for & with the OA.
