everest_lowres.jpgIntense hurricanes; water shortages; droughts; soil erosion; rise of sea level; the loss of biodiersity; extreme weather events; changes in agricultural yields; changes in trade routes; changes in trade routes; reduced summer stream flows; glacier retreat; species extinctions; deaths; spread of disease displacements; economic losses.

Dramatic, chaotic and tragic. Yet these are the effects of global warming and climate change. Depicted in a seris of organic graphics, EcoKnights introduces Ravi Shail' s series of paintings called "Will Nature Wait?".

Being ignorant, we sometimes fail to see the intricate relationship between ourselves and Nature, in present and former communities. What is the true nature of the world we live in now? How do we describe what we see in today’s environment accurately to enable mankind to do something positive about it today before it becomes too late?

Striving to see these images is like seeing the three dimensional shapes that emerge from an apparently meaningless scatter of dots in a Magic Eye picture. You can look at these pictures for a long time, and see nothing but the dots. But suddenly, when your mind is more receptive and you stop focusing on the surface pattern, you see beyond it and you recognize a deeper visual reality.

This is what describes Ravi Shail ’s series of paintings, part of his Will Nature Wait? collection. The ten abstract paintings is how Shail pays homage to Mother Nature – with a special focus on his interpretations of the results of man-made global catastrophes.

Combining organic graphics to communicate to viewers, Shail shares with his audience his artistic interpretation of the Artic glasier meltdown, of droughts and floods in India, and the rape of the planet through coal burning in power stations and factories in Russia and China, among others.

He says, “These paintings need to speak, they have to put up a question, a thought in people’s minds. They are almost abstract language on canvas but I see them as stick notes (but in much larger size) to remind people not to forget their responsibilities and of the actions they can take towards saving our planet – our home”.

For his collection in the Will Nature Wait? series, Shail uses monochromatic colors to depict the powerful forces behind natural calamities. There is a degree of mystical calmness in his paintings, a distinct message behind the use of eloquent colors, a hint of acceptance for how Nature can react to stimuli.

With these paintings, it is hoped that mankind will be motivated to learn from our evolutionary past, and critically examine our present, can we avoid this man-made catastrophe we call global warming. And while the paintings help to remind the audience to take a check on the consequences of our daily actions on the planet, Ravi Shail will be working with EcoKnights to develop a series of communication materials like postcards to create awareness on his artwork as well as fund raise for some of EcoKnights’ conservation programmes.

EcoKnights is a community-based and volunteer-oriented environmental organization which uses creative media and programmes to spread awareness on the environment.
