Concerned for the future of his new baby boy Sebastian, writer and director Andrew Nisker takes an average urban family, the McDonalds, and asks them to keep every scrap of garbage that they create for three months. He then takes them on a journey to find out where it all goes and what it's doing to the world. From organic waste to the stuff they flush down the potty, the plastic bags they use to the water they drink out of bottles, the air pollution they create when transporting the kids around, to using lights at Christmas, the McDonalds discover that for every action there is a reaction that affects them and the entire planet. What Happened to Green?
It
has been years since the forging of awareness campaigns on the environment and
many Malaysians have long forgotten the importance of the environment. Set in a
futuristic and Cloverfield-like setting, Malaysians despite all the reminders
around them have gone back to their old habits and apathetic attitudes about Nature
until a strange phenomenon swept the country. Not knowing the cause of this
phenomenon, Malaysians were caught off guard. Day by day, shades and hues of
green starts to fade away from the surface of the earth, leaving them a dull
and lifeless world we call home. What are the people going to do to restore the
green back in the world?
Catch this creative short film by Audrie Yeo, a EFF finalist, at the Eco FIlm Festival in November.

Matangnya Matang
In
this documentary, urban city dwellers are exposed to the importance of mangrove
forests and how these delicate areas are the key to the protection of our
coastal areas in the country. Apart from functioning as a source of fossil fuel
and food for the locals, mangrove forests play very important roles in stabilizing
the coastal systems, and form a natural barrier against killer tidal waves. When
the tsunamis struck India's
southern state of Tamil Nadu on Dec 26, 2005 for example, areas in Pichavaram
and Muthupet with dense mangrove swamps suffered fewer human casualties and
less damage to property compared to areas without mangroves.
In the context of preservation, management and observation of mangroves, the
audience is exposed to a plethora of invaluable experiences and lessons learnt
from the Matang mangroves. The Matang Mangrove Reserve is perhaps the only
tract of mangroves in the world that is managed sustainably with timber
extraction and fishing activities taking place through out the year.
A Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) personnel, Asmar Hassan is also a EFF finalist. Catch his documentary at our free public screenings at the Eco Film Festival, November 1st and 2nd 2008 at the National Arts Academy.

environment today compared to his younger years. This short film touches on the
moral obligations of mankind in leaving the future generation with a healthy
planet.
Mohamed
Fazry (Ary) and Norhafizzah Razak are both finalists for the Eco Film Fest
competition. Catch Wasiat in EcoKnights’ series of free public screenings or

Bumi Tanpa Suara
This short film takes an
emotional twist with the story of 9-year old deaf girl name Farahani. Despite
her disability, Farahani excels very well in the field of art. Having won first
prize in a World Environment Day art competition, Farahani’s artwork depicted an
image of a sad planet, surrounding by man-made catastrophes like global warming
and deforestation. This goes to show that even a young disabled child grasps
the basic understanding of the consequences of man-made actions on our planet.
Without her voice, Farahani attempts to educate her father and other adults
around her on their actions which contribute to global climate change. How does
a father understand and accept his daughter’s “silent” plea? Is this message - without
a voice - effective? What is obvious is that Farahani is a symbol of a world
without a voice, who like everyone else around her, hopes to be heard.
Roziah Adama is a first year scriptwriting student at the National Arts Academy and this is her first submission to a film festival. Catch Roziah's debut in short film making at the Eco Film Fest in November.

Definition: Environment
Definition:Environment is a short film which speaks strongly about how one person's seemingly unimportant actions can impact their environment. Set in the common life of Kuala Lumpur, Nelson is an ordinary young man who seemed oblivious to his surroundings and is not hesitant to waste energy or use too many plastic bags. However, his housemates act as his conscience and influence him to change his ways. This film serves as a reminder to us that our actions however insignificant translate to unpleasant consequences on our natural environment in the long run.
Joel Tan is a 19 year old first time film maker, who has taken a year off the usual route in search of new experiences in the media industry. Catch Joel Tan’s short film definition: environment at the Eco Film Festival, this November at the National Arts Academy.

Karma Alam
Since 1999, the residents of a housing area, Taman Sri Manja, moved in
to their new houses only to find themselves experiencing “weird”
problems. The air smelled putrid almost toxic-like and resulted in a
series of health problems among the residents. It became eerie when, in
a couple of months, all metal-made items in the homes turned black and
started to rot. No clear explanation was given to this problem. What is
the mystery? In this documentary film maker Puspavathy will expose the
reason behind these mysterious occurrences. The bottom line remains
that due to Malaysians’ lack of knowledge in waste management, the
nation is contributing more to climate change. How? See it in “Karma
Alam”.
Puspavathy Ramaloo is a TV3 broadcast journalist and has worked for
the TV station for the last 8 years. “Karma Alam” is her first
documentary for a film competition.
