Tourism is a booming industry. Now that everyone can fly, traveling from one continent to another has become easier and faster. No doubt tourism rakes in the dough and contributes a lot to a country’s economy; it also creates a whole load of other problems from waste management to the disruption to natural environments.
Today, many travelers are more aware of their impact on the environment. Responsible travel or green tourism, as they call it, is currently gaining popularity. Tourists now realize the need to protect the environment with responsible travel and seek for hotels with sustainable tourism policy.
In Malaysia, we have Wild Asia in the forefront of promoting responsible tourism. Called the Wild Asia's Responsible Tourism initiative, this programme aims to promote the best practices of sustainable tourism in Asia. The goal is to demonstrate that there are clear financial incentives for doing the right thing. This marked the birth of Wild Asia’s Responsible Tourism Awards which is now running in its third year. Through the awards Wild Asia provides the opportunity to recognize the efforts of tourism operators who are committed to following the principles of Responsible Tourism.
The reward for tourism operators is simple; Wild Asia offers them unique marketing opportunities to reach out to a growing global market for responsible tourism. The reward for travelers – ecologically and socially sound tourism - is just as important, because travelers make choices with their conscience and their budget alike.
Apart from the award ceremony, a series of workshops will also be organized. The awards and seminar are the chance for Wild Asia to bring together the leading practitioners of Responsible Tourism in the region. This 3-day event focuses not only on highlighting the best resorts and initiatives in Asia and South East Asia, but also on sharing knowledge and experience of putting Responsible Tourism in to practice and therefore encourage other operators to make Responsible Tourism part of their business strategy.
