18 Dec 2011, Kuala Lumpur - EcoKnights was invited by the Malaysian Gas Association, MGA, for a talk to 80 students as part of MGA's Prestige 2011 programme. The programme focus on practical environmental, safety and industrial guidance for engineers and was held over the weekend (Dec 17th and 18th) December at Prince Hotel and Residence Kuala Lumpur.
The audience comprised of some 80 engineering students from University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Universiti Teknology Petronas, among others.
EcoKnights was represented by its president Yasmin Ras, who conducted a 45 minutes interactive talk with the students on the need to think, manage and practice sustainability within the oil and gas engineering sphere. Several key issues on sustainability were highlighted with respect to global environmental issues from climate change to global warming.
Natural gas is amongst one of the fastest growing component of the world demand for primary energy consumption and over the last two decades, the Malaysian gas industry has grown significantly with the support of government policies that are aimed at reducing dependence on oil while ensuring a cleaner environment. Besides its major utilization in the power sector, gas is also used in non power sectors such as the petrochemical industry, oil refineries, transportation, residential, gas district cooling, steel mill and other small scale industries.
With the growing utilization of gas and its impact on practically all aspect of our daily living, there is a critical need to draw awareness to the enforcement of sound HSE practices related to gas applications. Proactive measures are required to prevent and eliminate risk of injuries, accidents in operations and related health hazards that could result in damage to our environment, resources, assets and property as well as losses in productivity.
The PRESTIGE program caters to university students in Peninsular Malaysia and is adapted from Shell Malaysia Gas & Power’s annual program which has been successfully rolled out to final-year engineering students from universities in Sabah and Sarawak.
Objectives of the program are :
The MGA-PRESTIGE programme is a concerted effort to reach out to the community, specifically to the nation’s future generations, to take up challenges in the gas industry whilst instilling the importance of HSE aspects in the growing prominent and critical role of the gas industry in fuelling nation-building projects. Through the implementation of this programme, MGA also seeks to establish a firm exemplary stand on the propagation and practical application of HSE in the utilization and promotion of gas as a clean, environmental friendly and efficient source of energy.
